I make my own detergent-2 cups borax, 2 cups washing soda, 1 bar of Fels Naptha grated. Use 1 heaping tablespoon. For the dryer, 3-4 wool dryer balls sprayed with combo of 8 oz distilled water, tablespoon of witch hazel and essential oils of choice.

Great post, I switched to soap flakes a couple of years ago and would not go back. They can be scented with pure essential oils and you only need a few drops. I make a liquid laundry detergent by mixing the 50g soap flakes to 1 litre of boiling water, let the soap flakes dissolve, cool, add essential oil and voila homemade detergent liquid, and so, so cheap compared to buying in the supermarket, and best of all no nasty chemical additives.

Now even brand new clothing “fresh” from the store smells like chemical fragrance. I always wash new clothing before wearing. BUT, now that they smell like fragrance the odor will not come out. Any tips? I’ve tried Borax soaks, even Skunk’s Etc enzyme odor remover.

Try a warm or hot wash if the fabric allows, use real unscented soap, and let them air out in the sun. Enzyme cleaners usually don’t work on perfume smells.

I figured the enzymes were for more protein based odors! Fourth washing and airing and I think it’s working. I may give our little ozone generator a try too. Thankfully it is mostly cotton. Man made materials are next to impossible to work with. The chemicals must bind together. Thanks for the tips!!

Thank you for the great article. I have been using “clean people” laundry detergent sheets for a couple years and I think those are fairly healthy, but maybe I will look for some soap flakes and also washing powder at one of the healthier stores. I don’t remember seeing soap flakes, but I haven’t really looked for them. Thank you for the suggestions. I had so many years of using the worst most toxic laundry detergent like TIDE before I knew how toxic it was. I am also trying to find 100% organic Cotton clothing and also find some linen clothing, but it’s very difficult without spending a huge amount of money.
