While I appreciate your observations about China, the one thing that should never be discounted is the fact that God raises up and casts down every civilization/ruler/government on this planet. That’s how it’s been from the beginning and will be until the end of this world.
The history of Godless modern China was Godless [playing God] Marxist socialism installed by Godless Marxist Democrat FDR at the Yalta sell-out, i.e., giving all China and half of Europe, Korea, and Vietnam to the commies, all causing much misery, despair, and mass death and the death of many US soldiers! All to teach us Romans 6:23, i.d, "Death is [was] the wages of [Democrats] sin, but the gift of God is everlasting life through Jesus Christ our lord." So pick which one to follow!
What I find most interesting here is the cycle itself: fragmentation, instability, consolidation, order, rigidity, weakening, and eventually fragmentation again. That seems to reveal something deeper than simply “power wins.”
The tension between Confucian relational order and Legalist control is especially revealing. A system can create enormous stability through increasing control, but if stability depends on suppressing too much internal variation, the very mechanism that preserves the system can eventually become part of its vulnerability.
The Mandate of Heaven is perhaps the most fascinating piece of the whole story to me. It contains an ancient recognition that legitimacy is not purely institutional. It is conditional on the system actually sustaining life, prosperity, and social coherence.
In that sense, Chinese history may be less a lesson about the inevitability of ruthless power than about the recurring problem of "how a civilization maintains coherence without having to impose it entirely from above". That question feels remarkably relevant far beyond China.
